Back towards mid-November, the outdoor pools we were swimming at began to get a little cold. When we approached the Central Florida YMCA Aquatic Center with our plan, they knocked 50% off of the joiners fee. We’ve been hitting their lap lanes four days a week since.
Thank you, Central Florida YMCA, for giving us a place to train for this race.
In other training news, the ‘Training’ link in the header will have content shortly, detailing the training regime we will begin in January. Between now and then, we’ll continue to visit the ‘Y’ and prepare for that mid-January date.
Welcome to threemg.com! We’re live and ready to rock the next five months.
Who are we? Three out-of-shape guys who love sports and kids and want to give something back. Our “Mission” page and the previous post outlines what it is we are doing, and we’re ready to let you know that we want to hear your comments and hopefully start seeing the donations roll in.
We’ve been training for the past month and half to prepare for the Half IronMan training program that will start in mid-January. Yes, you read that right, we are training for a training program! Our previous combined workout program included two 10K’s and two 5K’s in the past two years. Total. No workouts in between, we just ran the races cold as they were team builders.
But we love sport and felt there couldn’t be a better way to improve the lives of others than through it. The draw? We’re not going to just run a half marathon, or ride a half century on the bike. We’re going to compete in the second most grueling endurance event in the world - the Half IronMan: a 1.2 mile swim, 56 mile bike, and 13.1 mile run. 70.3 total miles of endurance exhilaration. Why? For the kids who don’t get to visit the magical place that we work at every day. For the kids who are told that the only week they could come is already filled.
Our goal is to raise $1,000 for each mile of the race. Needless to say, our work is cut out for us. That $70,300 will be donated to Give Kids the World as they build 70 more villas to add-on to their 70 acre resort for kids with life-threatening illness. Through support, words of encouragement, and donation, please join us in GIVING KIDS THE WORLD!
We’re just getting started…
Each year, more than 25,000 kids are diagnosed with a life threatening illness. Give Kids The World is a non-profit organization that serves as a children’s resort to fulfill the dreams of its guests: to visit the places and characters from their storybooks.The Give Kids the World property features accommodations to support up to 90 families at a time, and is consistently full. Its 70 acres features a playground, waterpark, diner, and even an ice cream parlor - all provided to children who have been granted a Wish.
A couple times a month, we are fortunate enough to serve the children and their families dinner (Christmas dinner every Thursday!). The organization is currently planning to expand from 90 villas to 160 in order to accommodate the requests they receive…
And this is where threeMG’s quest begins.
Our Task: Finish a grueling 1.2 mile swim, 56 mile bike and 13.1 mile run, better known as a Half IronMan race.
Our Goal: To raise $70,300 in five months. $1,000 for each mile of the Ford IronMan 70.3 Florida race, which we will compete in on May 20, 2007. All proceeds will be donated to Give Kids The World’s expansion efforts.
Combined Triathlon Experience: 0 races (to be honest, we’d never been on a road bike before November).
